When the winter weather finally leaves, insects that have been hibernating will start to surface. This is the time of year when bugs try to get into our homes to find an easy food source after being tucked away out of the cold weather for so long. There are several things you can do to avoid having insects get in your home in the spring and summer months. Here are some precautions you can take to keep these critters from infesting your home.

Do Spring Cleaning Early

Start your spring cleaning a few months early in an attempt to ward out insects when they hibernate. Insects will congregate in areas that are less than clean, so doing your best to remove unwanted debris will help keep them away. One spot you should deep cleaned is the kitchen area.

Remove any remnants from dried on food products off of counters and the stove top. Keep your leftovers in sealed containers in the refrigerator so insects do not have a food supply. Keep the kitchen, as well as the rest of your home, vacuumed to remove any crumbs that my fall.

Check The Exterior

Do a thorough check of the exterior of your home for cracks and crevices where little critters can burrow. You will need to fill these areas with caulking so bugs cannot use them as entryways to the interior of your home. Place gravel around the perimeter of the house to keep insects from using your exterior walls as a walkway.

If grass is prominent up to the edges of your home, bugs can easily continue their venture by walking onto your home to search for a way inside. They will avoid gravel. If you have pets outdoors, keep their food dishes up and out of the way when they are not in use so uneaten food will not attract insects.

Use Commercial Products

Keep insect killing sprays and lawn granules on hand for when the snow has finally melted away. Sprinkle insect killing granules on the lawn and around the perimeter of your home to kill the first batch of emerging insects before they attempt to get inside your home. Having bug spray on hand will help keep any potential insect infestation from spreading by using it on the first sign of any bugs that get inside the home. Make sure to keep these products locked up away from children and do not use them when pets or children are in the home.
